Students had to rethink their strategy of creating the longest line using different materials. Students also worked on communicating with their peers while building in small groups. This task used cooperation and imagination.
Design Thinking
Day 1 of Design Thinking – Students worked independently to create the longest line using an envelope, string, tape and post-it note. Many awesome ideas were tried!
Snowflakes
Students used loose parts to build a snowflake. Snowflakes start with a speck so students created a center with 6 arms radiating from the middle. The snowflakes look magical with the different materials combined to create a piece of art.
Atrium Area
Today presented itself with the perfect opportunity to learn about and play in the atrium area. Our classroom extends into the space outside our door where there are many different places set up to play with friends. Students can enjoy sand, hot wheels, kitchen, doll house, marble run and trains. The atrium was our warmest and brightest spot while the power remained out for the day.
Magnificent Microscopes
Our class was fortunate to spend the morning with Dr. Elaine Humphrey, the head of microscopy at the University of Victoria. Her goal was to engage students and ignite their inner curiosity about the world around them, especially the microcosmos. Microcosmos means ‘little world.’ Students rotated between 3 stations where they used different types of microscopes to look at sand from all over the world, little shrimps in their world and different types of household cooking items (salt, sugar, etc.) in our world. Afterwards, they voted on their favourite station and favourite microscope.
